Immigrant rights and labor groups are called for and received a demonstrate at
LAX, to call for an end to raids against immigrants, and racial profiling
of workers. Several hundred people showed up on the green below the legs of the Encounter Restaurant. A diverse coalition of unions (some representing airport workers), youth, community and church groups represented before an armada of corporate news outlets. Los presente then marched through the arrivals ramp up the escelator to the departure level and paraded front of Terminal One. The echoes of horning taxis and singing marchers rallied the event further. The occasional travelers departing to points unknown and workers in their daily routine showed support.
One corporate reporter when asked an admittedly "stupid question" said that it seemed to be the INS' role to crack down on illegal workers taking flights in airports (though as my mom says, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask). The march spokesperson responded saying that represents a change in INS policy. Cracking down on travelers papers at airports uses ineffective enforcement strategy and the "war on terrorism" as an excuse to crack down on workers rights. "Terrorism" is not a good excuse to resume INS raids.
Despite the media it drew and the traffic it must have caused, the event went smoothly and there were no reported arrests at this time.
