In the last 100 years the automobile has had a profound impact on people’s lives and the nature of the built environment. Indeed, the entire global ecosystem has been altered by the proliferation of motorized vehicles across the surface of the planet. In a 2004 report the World Health Organization stated that “Every day around the world more than 3,000 people die from road traffic injury.” This puts the total worldwide deaths from traffic injury at over 1 million a year.
