The #PeoplesPlatform: An API Agenda - featuring Rep. Judy Chu
Sunday, January 28 at 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Japanese American Cultural & Community Center - JACCC 244 S San Pedro St, Los Angeles, California 90012
"Work as if you lived in the early days of a better nation." - Alasdair Gray
The Progressive Asian Network for Action (PANA) is excited to present "The #PeoplesPlatform: An API Agenda." This event is a multimedia presentation providing Asian & Pacific Islander (API) Americans and allies an overview of the People's Platform, which has been endorsed by U.S. Representative Judy Chu. The People's Platform is a package of legislation that points towards a bold vision for the future of our communities based on the interests of the 99% (https://summerforprogress.com/platform). https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/peoplesplatform
We are pleased to have Congresswoman Judy Chu provide the opening remarks for the event. Rep. Chu is Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and represents California's 27th Congressional District (including Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley), which has more API-majority cities than any other district in the nation. We're pleased that Rep. Chu has agreed to co-sponsor all eight bills of the People's Platform, joining Representatives Barbara Lee (CA 13), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), and Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) in standing on behalf of the interests of the people.
PANA members and friends will guide attendees through multimedia presentations giving overviews of each of the eight bills in the People's Platform and connecting each bill with issues affecting API communities and with the presenters' own on-the-ground activism work. We will also have speakers on a few additional issues important to API communities--such as Peace and Human Rights (“Pivot to Asia”), Tenant Rights, and Immigrant Rights --as the People's Platform launches us towards the beginnings of a national API "people's agenda" to unite our City and Nation, starting from Los Angeles County and moving beyond.
A full line-up of speakers for the following topics will be provided in advance of the event: 1. Peace and Human Rights 2. People's Platform Bill 1: Healthcare for All 3. People's Platform Bill 2: Women’s Rights 4. People's Platform Bill 3: College for All 5. People's Platform Bill 4: Tax on Wall Street 6. People's Platform Bill 5: Workers Rights 7. People's Platform Bill 6: Voting Rights 8. People's Platform Bill 7: Criminal Justice and Immigrant Rights 9. People's Platform Bill 8: Protect the Environment 10. Tenant Rights 11. Immigrant Rights
All are welcome! Light refreshments will be available, and public transit & carpooling to the venue is encouraged.
Admission to the event is free, but donations are welcome to help cover the event space rental fee.
The Progressive Asian Network for Action is an independent grassroots organization that mobilizes Asian Pacific Islanders and allies to advance the interests of the 99%.
