Join the Fight Against Criminalization of Youth by Dept. of Homeland Security & FBI
The Stop LAPD Spying Coalition and partner organizations will be holding a community meeting to continue building the fight against the LA City’s plans to implement Department of Homeland Security and FBI’s programs that criminalize and profile youth. The meeting will take place on Tuesday April 10th at 6 PM at LA CAN at 838 E. 6th St., LA 90021.
Called Countering Violent Extremism (CVE), Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE), Black Identity Extremism (BIE) and the MS-13 narrative being pushed to target Latinx youth, these programs are part of a much larger system of state violence, surveillance and data collection that criminalize youth, promote racial profiling, silence critical thinking and creativity, and invade privacy.
Similar programs in United Kingdom such as Prevent, have targeted Black and Brown students and immigrant families, with devastating effect on youth and their communities. Furthermore these programs have turned educators into mandated reporters of any activity deemed “suspicious” by the government.
There is a long history in the United States of demonizing youth of color. The war on drugs, war on crime and the war on gangs has led to mass incarceration and destruction of young lives. Now the war on terror has unleashed programs with new names with same destructive consequences, with Black and Brown youth being labeled as threats to national security. We look forward to your participation as we build our fight against CVE, PVE, BIE and the criminalization of youth.
