Mass Protest for Stephon Clark in Altadena
Stephon Clark murdered by Sacramento police on March 18Pasadenans and Altadenans Against Police Violence and other local activist groups demand genocidal police killings stop
On March 18, 2018, Stephon Clark, a 23-year-old father of two, was murdered in the backyard of his grandmother\'s house by two Sacramento police officers who fired 20 bullets at him, hitting him eight times, mostly in the back. The officers claimed he was holding a gun; he was, in fact, holding a cell phone. Here in Pasadena, police officers murdered Leroy Barnes in 2009, Kendrec McDade in 2012, JR Thomas in 2016 and Matthew Hurtado in 2017, and brutally beat Chris Ballew in 2017. These events are part of a broader concatenation of killings of innocent civilians, disproportionately people of color, by law enforcement across the country.
On Saturday, April 14, Pasadenans and Altadenans Against Police Violence, Refuse Fascism, the Altadena ACLU and other activist groups will hold a rally in front of the Mobil Station on the corner of Fair Oaks Ave and Woodbury Rd in Altadena, where Chris Ballew was beaten by Pasadena police, at 10 AM.
We will honor the memory of Stephon Clark, we will honor the memories of Leroy Barnes, Kendrec McDade, JR Thomas, and Matthew Hurtado, and we will honor Chris Ballew who survived his brutal beating.
We will then march down Fair Oaks Ave, turn left on Washington, and circuit back to the Mobil station holding signs emblazoned with the images of these men and shouting chants objurgating police violence and murder, reminiscent of protests in recent weeks in Sacramento.
