IRVINE - In an unassuming classroom somewhere on the UCI campus, about 80 people, most of them students, gathered to hear the words of the recently-released Black Liberation Army prisoner Sekou Odinga, imprisoned for 33 years for his role in the 1979 emancipation of BLA soldier Assata Shakur.
Odinga is on tour speaking to students and community members, not only to tell his story, but also to encourage others to work to free US-held political prisoners and prisoners of war. This Wednesday's lecture was just one of a series that included colleges in Los Angeles, Orange County, and Santa Barbara, as well a presentation to the community at the South Central Library on Saturday.
The presentation on Wednesday was preceded by a video about political prisoners from the Black Liberation Struggle, and then some words from a professor.

FONTANA - A group of about 20 Fontana residents and local activists gathered yesterday evening outside of Randall Pepper Elementary School to commemorate the 1945 firebombing of the house owned by O'Day Short, an African-American targeted for racist violence for challenging white supremacy in the segregated city by daring to purchase a house on the south side of Baseline Avenue. Short, his wife Helen, and their two children Barry and Carol-Ann were all killed as a result of the December 16, 1945 firebombing. The incident, when eventually investigated, and even then only superficially, never led to any arrest or prosecution of any suspect, despite evidence pointing to death threats from the white real estate agent who sold the property and two white deputies of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.1 The vigil lasted about an hour-and-a-half, and featured words from the attendees, political discussion, and prayer.

The reason we as Americans are okay with giving a certain portion of our hard earned dollars towards foreign aid, is that we want to help those in need. There are certainly people around the world that need help financially, and we have all seen and read the stories. It's important to remember that we are blessed and fortunate to live in this great nation of ours. There are many more less than fortunate people living far below the standard of those in a Western nation, than those living at that level or even close to it. We often forget, but when the time comes, we are compassionate - most of us anyway.
There are all manner of things that get done with our tax payer cash. Countless. If we learned of them all just today, most voters would probably demand to elect entirely new representatives from entirely new parties. If the cable news network’s decided each to dedicate a full day to listing all the things they went to, each taking a separate day in successive order, there would be hell to pay. Just think of the things we know about that have had us so upset since 2003.

Whenever we hear about sexual predators in our society we, desire to take action and hunt them, bring them to justice and get them off the streets. On the news often we hear of rings of such people getting busted. Sometimes it's the internet and child pornographers, etc. Sometimes it's closer to home. Either way, we're glad they're busted, exposed and off the streets. We consider that a high priority for law enforcement, wouldn't you agree? The safety, welfare and protection of our kids comes first and foremost, prior to anything else. We feel it in the pit of our stomachs, instinctively, whether we have kids or we don't, we must make them safe.

Often the best are for those inner reasons that are needed to help us with personal matters like work, our children, our loved ones, our health and the many basic decent things in life that from time to time can benefit from a little blind faith. We don't all believe in a God or a higher power and more and more of us believe this is about it, feeling you're born, you die - that's a that. Though many believe it's just an “opiate for the masses,” I feel that just because I don't believe in another's view, there is no harm, and in fact I've personally seen how it can be very helpful to people struggling with things like addictions, etc, though I never had that issue myself.

A small amount extra can make the difference between getting your kid what they need for school or not, like a new or even used computer or some school clothes. With just a few extra in the way of cash, there may not have to be the monthly juggling act of figuring which bills to pay and which to put off. And making up such seemingly miniscule increments of ground regarding getting current on bills and/or debt can really help take a load off a person's mind, if only until the next paycheck. Most of us have been there, and if not probably will at some point or another in life.
People navigating unusually trying circumstances often need to dig deep to come up with responses and solutions to those predicaments that are equally unconventional, in order to effectively navigate those circumstances. There are so many ways we can be tried in life, and not one of us experiences the exact same test, or experiences a duplicate test exactly the same way another person’s does. Individual and singular, there will always be something peculiar to who we are that is introduced into everything we do. Dealing with adversity is no different, and it can bring about new responses to situations many others have previously been through, due to our uniqueness as individuals.

For people going through harassment and discrimination within a structured environment like a job, school, religious organization, etc it can be a nerve wracking experience. This is especially true at first, as the person being harassed will feel as if they are suddenly being treated in a way they didn't expect. It can feel harsh and emotionally jarring. There can be stress caused not only by the harassing and discriminatory actions themselves, but also by the psychological toll. By emotional toll I mean the worrying, the stressing over what happened and the emotional toll caused by being unsure about what will come next.
In politics the tendency for candidates to move to the center when things get tough for them has become increasingly popular. The move helps them to side step and deflect heat coming at them from things that they have done or that have been done to them causing their popularity to wane. It also can appease a segment of folks that typically are not their constituency when members of their own base are looking at them unfavorably in hopes of making up lost ground regarding supporters. Come election time this can be especially important as it can help garner support. However, this still requires strong support from at least most of your base, and when they are fed up with a politician it is usually a good idea to get them behind that person to have not only guaranteed votes, but so as to look as if you are who you say you are. Bizarre schizophrenic personality shifts that try and say “I am no longer the person I was just four years ago” can seem – off.
Politicians have a tendency to make promise upon promise come election time, and that's to be expected. They are competing with one another and that competition brings about the need to discuss those things they would like to come to pass as though they already have come to pass. It seems to bring about the need to discuss what they most wanted to happen as if it actually had occurred, whether it has or not. The competition tends to bring about the need to blame the other person instead of confessing some of your own faults.

Parker Jaques isn't the usual sort of interviewee who gets featured in a Queer publication. That's why I wanted to interview him for the cover story in the September 2011 Zenger's Newsmagazine. He doesn't have a traumatic, breast-beating coming-out story to tell. He wasn't Queer-bashed in school because his mother encouraged him to fight back if anyone tried it. He's proud of his identity not only as a Bisexual but as a gender-identified male, and he has such withering contempt for people (like the August 2011 Zenger's cover person, Red) who call themselves "non-binary" -- neither male nor female -- that once we started discussing that subject it was hard to get him to talk about anything else. Red, who works at San Diego's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center, identifies themselves as non-binary: that is, neither male nor female but somewhere in a "cloud" of genders that rejects the idea that there are only two human gender identities, male and female. They gave an interview for the August 2011 Zenger's Newsmagazine in which they (you refer to a non-binary person as "they," "them" or "theirs" even if you're only referencing one individual) explained these new, unfamiliar concepts of gender that are beyond the experience of most people, including most Transgender people. It’s not every atheist author who begins a lecture to promote his book with a bit of a fire-breathing Fundamentalist Christian sermon on the nature and ubiquity of human sin and the need to appeal to the Holy Spirit to be cleansed of it. But that’s what Darrel W. Ray did at the San Diego Public Library September 19 in an appearance sponsored by the Humanist Association of San Diego (HASD). A former believer, Ray discussed the total lack of logic in religious appeals and the way religions mimic the behavior of germs in spreading from person to person, use classic hypnotic techniques in their services, and inculcate guilt in their believers — especially about sex. Ray also mentioned ways rationalists can talk to belivers without immediately putting them on the defensive, and offered help for those who are — in his words — “recovering from religion.”

It’ no accident that many people are finding a rekindled interest in the writings of Karl Marx; the international assault of workers wages and benefits, continued warfare, and economic instability in general are causing a revival of the buried and slandered ideas of Marxism. Many of these concepts offer tremendous insight about the origins and workings of capitalism, and thus the causes of many of society’s current problems. Needless to say, involved are immense implications for anybody interested in becoming an activist. A “Marxist” is someone who accepts some of the key points about history and society first explained by Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels, and elaborated further by the writings of Lenin, Trotsky, and many others (Stalin, Mao, etc are Marxists in name only). Unfortunately, one cannot learn about these ideas by going to college, aside from the many biased and bastardized versions of the subject. The following is a brief explanation of some of the more important concepts of Marxism.

Just to be clear, I didn't choose this title lightly or facetiously, but in all seriousness. In speaking to "a coming civil war" I am "drawing inspiration" from Newt Gingrich (the prominent Republican politician who was formerly the Speaker of the House of Representatives), who has made the observation that what's happening now in the electoral arena and the broader things that it reflects in U.S. society is analogous to what was going on in the U.S. in the 1840s and the 1850s, and that this isn't something that will—I'm paraphrasing, but this is the essence—this isn't something that will go away. You went to China and you talked to these people around how China was opening up to the West and saying Marcos was a great leader and this, that and the other, and you were asking these people in the Chinese party and they didn't have the answers. And part of it is: did those people not have the answers, or did they have some questions on it, but they were more debating it internally and they couldn't talk to you about it? How can you have the mix of people being able to be in the midst of all the questions that are going on, intellectually--political questions, but also in the ideological realm--without breaking democratic centralism? How do you have people in the mix of that, being able to engage it and even in some ways go off in the wrong direction in order to eventually get to the right direction, but then not have that cause a splintering effect. You know?

I pulled this from the NY-IMC, and though I think Zizek has issues as well, i really enjoyed reading this little critique of Chomsky. His cult of personality is a little much. I really enjoyed another theory book called- The End of Education by William Spanos. Writen by a much less known theorist (another reason to dislike zizek and Chomsky) this book goes into detail about some of what zizek says-while talking about 60s political movements and their "failure of the radical moment."
