In January of 1989, before the sex offender hysteria hit the legislative sector of our country, a study was conducted entitled ‘Sex Offender Recidivism a Review‘, by the noted researchers L. Furby, M.R.Weinroth, and L. Blackshaw. Although the primary purpose of this study was to try and determine the actual recidivism of people who are involved in sex crimes what it secondarily discovered was the effectiveness of treatment programs or lack thereof I should say in reducing recidivism.. Realize that today most treatment programs that use behavior modification follow the same type of guidelines that were used during this time. They were basically drug and alcohol programs that were modified to treat people with what therapists perceived as sexual control problems.

The moral panic of our current age, an obsession with sexual inviolability, illustrates our continued susceptibility to emotional and irrational fears.

Riverside County passed an ordinance last week that violates the constitutional rights of anyone convicted of a sex-related crime. There are more than 2,500 such people in that County plus family members affected. Anyone who violates ordinance may be sentenced to 6 months in jail and fined up to $1,000.

Where are we heading with all this? Will America be satisfied with nothing less than a holocaust perpetrated against anyone who has violated its sexual norms? It seems unthinkable that people who consider themselves progressives should be silent on this issue, and should even, at times, be in the forefront of those who are invested in continuing to ratchet up the sex abuse panic.

First it will be sex offenders that are required to register, next they will require all anyone arrested to be registered, and in 10 years or so they will be requiring all new born children to be registered – not because they are criminals, but just in case, and for that old line "to protect the children" – but the real reason is to expand the police state!
