The Jena Generation --An interview with Jordan Flaherty (tags)
If this city is going to recover, the first step is getting out the truth that New Orleans is not okay. Most of the country believes either that New Orleans has been rebuilt, or that, if not, it’s because people here are lazy and/or corrupt and wasted the nation’s generous assistance. But New Orleans is still a city in crisis. The oft-promised aid, whether from FEMA or various federal and private agencies, has not arrived.

The Reconstruction Party: A New Political Development (tags)
There is a new political party on the horizon that is attempting to offer working class Blacks, working people in general, and the poor an alternative to the two capitalist parties, the Democrats and the Republicans. Stunned by how little has been done by either capitalist party for anyone who was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans – other than the rich and powerful – the Reconstruction Party was officially launched on September 2 of this year. As a first step, the Party is running Malcolm Suber for City Council in New Orleans. Suber is a former textile worker and auto worker and member of the UAW, and has been active in labor struggles since moving to New Orleans, especially around union organizing. He was a founding member and national organizer of the People's Hurricane Relief Fund and Oversight Coalition, a broad coalition of grassroots groups organized around the demand for the reconstruction of New Orleans under community control. In part, this movement is a response to the ruthless policies implemented by the ruling class in New Orleans. Taking full advantage of the helpless situation of many working people, especially the Black majority of New Orleans, the capitalists have pressed to privatize everything, including schools, health care, and prisons, while at the same time preventing the vast majority of those who were forced to leave from returning to their homes.

Through the Roof: A Play about New Orleans, California, and "Natural" Disaster (tags)
Through the Roof: A Natural History—A New Play with Music about "Natural” Disaster—will be performed on Monday, March 5th, at 7:00 p.m. in downtown Los Angeles, at the Central Library’s, Mark Taper Auditorium, at 630 W. 5th Street, Los Angeles. (Phone: 213-228-7000.) A professional staged-reading of a new play, with live music, by award-winning dramatist Rick Mitchell, directed by Hope Alexander, music by Max Kinberg. Through the Roof chronicles the adventures of two people who meet on a rooftop in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans while escaping rising floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina. The pair inadvertently travel back in history, to New Orleans and California, and discover that race, gender, and natural catastrophe are never far removed. The play is based, in part, on recent interviews with disaster survivors (especially of Katrina), as well as New Orleans and California history. An audience talk-back follows the show. Produced by the Central Library (Literature and Fiction Dept.) and the College of Humanities, California State University, Northridge. The play reading is part of a California Stories project entitled: “Natural Disaster: California, New Orleans, the World” (www.calhum.org), and the project is supported, in part, by a grant from the California Council for the Humanities. We revolutionaries insist that black liberation, including the conquest of full democratic rights for blacks in the US, can only be achieved through socialist revolution. Over seven months have passed since Katrina destroyed New Orleans and levee failures inundated the Big Easy. Much of New Orleans is well along the road to recovery. However, if you travel just a few miles east of downtown--to the other side of the Industrial Canal—you find yourself in a neighborhood that does not look much different than it did in September. There are no businesses operating, no schools in session, no electricity, no FEMA trailers, and no RUNNING WATER.

Under the Louisiana state of emergency, all MDs who have active medical licenses in their home state have instant prescribing privileges here in Louisiana--simply bring copies of your license and DEA. I am not sure if this applies to NPs--could someone check on this? Locals believe New Orleans Levees were Intentionally blown (tags)
Could the levees in New Orleans have been INTENTIONALLY blown out in order to save sections of the city deemed to be more important? The locals certainly seem to think so, yet, as usual, the mainstream media is barely picking up on this wave of opinion, so it is left to us once again to bring the issue into the open.

Only Whites Claim Katrina’s Poor Response is NOT Racist (tags)
I have not seen one person of color saying that the response to Katrina in New Orleans had “nothing to do with race.” The mere fact that the ONLY people saying that are white says it all to me. Last night, I saw the Mayor of Houston whose name is ironically “Mr. White” pooh-poohing the race card...

Genocide americano en New Orleans (tags)
In the midst of all of this pain and misery, the media and the authorities have decided that the central story now is the looting and "lawlessness" that are taking place around the city.

Hurricane “Katrina” hit the central Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, causing devastation. When the Army Corps of Engineers had asked for additional funding to protect the New Orleans region from flooding, the Bush-Cheney Gang said, “No!” Meanwhile, the Neocon-inspired Iraqi War continues to waste hundreds of billions of dollars of our nation’s resources.
