The Kilusang Dekada 70 ( KD70) composed of First Quarter Storm and martial law activists based in the United States pays tribute to Philippine Navy Commodore Ramon Alcaraz, a martial law and anti-Marcos activist. He died June 25 in Orange County, Southern California. Commodore Alcaraz is a World War II veteran and a survivor of Bataan. He belonged to PMA class 1940 and commanded the fleet of PT boats of the fledgling Philippine Commonwealth Navy that was placed under the command of USAFFE when the whole Commonwealth army as conscripted in 1941.
SGSI Commander Manuel Aquino, 91 (tags)
Commander Manny Aquino, past president of the Filipino World War II veterans group –the Society of Guerillas and Scouts International (SGSI) based in Los Angeles passed away last August 5, 2008. He was 91 years old. Cmdr. Manny Aquino was a World War II Bataan veteran and fought under the USAFFE. He was also a survivor of the infamous Death March and later a guerilla. He served under the Philippine Army and fought under PEFTOK during the Korean War from 1950-1954. He later joined the Philippine Navy until he retired from military service while in the Philippines. Cmdr. Aquino succeeded Cmdr. Isidro Bathan and held the post of SGI commander until he was relieved by Cmdr. Jack Vergara in December 16, 2006. He was an active member of the army reserve and its honor guard. He was born on August 13, 1917 in the Philippines and lived in Carson.

Huwaran siya sa katatagan sa prinsipyo, pagiging makatotohanan, masipag, pursigido, mapagkumbaba, at malapit sa mga kasama at sa mamamayan. Itinatanghal siya at pinararangalan ng sambayanang Pilipino.

Ka Dan Vizmanos had fought martial law and crusaded against the United States military bases in the Philippines, among other patriotic causes. A Philippine Navy captain, a graduate of the famous US Merchant Marine Academy and an expert in submarine warfare, he joined the national democratic movement, blazing a trail for others like him in the military to follow. US WARSHIPS ARRIVE IN ZAMBO FOR NAVAL WAR EXERCISES (tags)
Three US warships arrived here yesterday to participate in naval war exercises with the Philippine Navy, officials said. The USS Harpers Ferry from Sasebo, Japan; USS Ford from Everett, Washington; and the USS Jarett from San Diego, California arrived and anchored off Zamboanga City near the Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) base early yesterday to help upgrade the Philippine Navy’s counter-terrorism capability.

A US State Department official said yesterday the May 14 elections were generally successful despite reports of violence and fraud. “I know there have been some problems with violence. But I would say overall the elections have been very successful and a real sign that the Philippines has a very well-developed democracy. It has never been an easy process,” Christopher Hill, US State Department assistant secretary for East Asia and the Pacific, said over Radyo ng Bayan. Hill’s observation followed an earlier statement of concern from the US Embassy in Manila on reports of violence in many parts of the country during the elections.
The Philippine armed forces fielded more than 10 warships around Sulu in what could be the single biggest naval blockade meant to trap Abu Sayyaf terrorists in their lair. Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said yesterday the naval blockade formed part of the "small unit tactics" designed to eventually wipe out local and foreign terrorists holed out in Sulu, as part of the military’s ongoing offensive dubbed Oplan Ultimatum
