US prosecutors have threatened to revoke Homies Unidos leader Alex Sanchez' bail and return him to prison for his part in supporting a truce between imprisoned gang members in El Salvador. The prosecutors are seeking to prevent Sanchez fromappearing in San Francisco this weekend at the opening of a Culture Clash play, "Placas", based loosely on Sanchez' long journey from gang-banger to peacemaker.

On December 26, Dora “Alicia” Recinos Sorto, age 32, was assassinated, the second anti-mining activist killed this week in the small community of Nueva Trinidad in the department of Cabañas. Recinos Sorto was eight months pregnant and carrying her two-year old child when she was shot on her way back from doing laundry at a nearby river. She and her husband, José Santos Rodriguez, were outspoken opponents of the non-operational El Dorado mine which Pacific Rim, a Vancouver-based mining company is desperate to reopen despite widespread community opposition.

Political Crisis in El Salvador (tags)
A political crisis of explosive proportion is looming this week in El Salvador. In an apparent Effort to decapitate the leadership of one wing of the social movement, Salvadoran national police detained and imprisoned leaders of the Association of Rural Communities for the Development of El Salvador (CRIPDES), a social organization which has worked since the 1980’s with over three hundred organized communities to advocate for their rights. Along with 10 community members, the leaders were placed in “preventative detention” for up to three months pending trial by special tribunal on charges of terrorism.

ACAJUTLA, El Salvador — Long before the current debate over the Central America Free Trade Agreement, workers throughout the region were under attack from economic reforms that have broken unions, privatized workplaces and lowered wages. One reason unions throughout Central America oppose the agreement so strongly is that CAFTA cements that reform policy into place. The treaty would require dismantling the public sector to encourage private, especially foreign, investment, regardless of cost.

Members of the Salvadoran community, their organizations, and their supporters... gather at the Salvadoran Consulate in Los Angeles, Wednesday, April 14, 2004, to protest the illegal U.S. occupation of Iraq. The protestors focused on the appalling U.S. military practice of using immigrants as soldiers... promising expedited citizenship proceedings for service.
