Retaliation is giving back in kind. We are struck, we strike back. Both President Bush and Osama Bin Laden believe in retaliation; both argue that their strikes are answering attacks, that they are protecting and avenging their people. Both anathematize the other as ruthless and evil. And both are far from the forgiveness and peace their religions preach. In the Koran Allah says "My mercy embraces all things." In the Christian Gospel Christ says "Do not resist evil with evil. If someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well." Israel also is very righteously into retaliation, answering the abduction of two soldiers with war. Are Bin Laden, Bush and Olmert, reigning leaders who affirm the great monotheisms, more than warriors? The fusion of political and religious leadership in these figures is volatile-they license crusades without check.

The Orange County Register is reporting that Hal Netkin of Van Nuys was the driver of a Minivan that struck three persons who were attending the protest against Minuteman founder Jim Gilchrist's appearance at the California Coalition for Immigration Reform meeting in Garden Grove last night..
J23 Milk N Honey Protest (tags)
A small but vocal and lively group of 15 or so protestors picketed and marched out side of the Milk N Honey Restaurant (by the corner of Robertson and Pico) this Sunday. The demonstrators were out in force to protest the unfair labor practices of the owner of Milk N Honey. The demo started at 11:30, at which point the owners and friends Milk N Honey came out to the streets and started to harass the protestors, thouough intimidation and name calling. The owers also illegally parked their large-white Milk N Honey van's infront of the demonstration so the public could not see the protestors outside their establishment. The police were called to the scene about 30 mins after the protestors arrived on the scene. One of the protesters was struck in the face with her own video camera, when a supporter of Milk N Honey came out and struck her. The unidentified man was taken to jail for assault. The demostrators would "boo" when patrons broke the picket line and dined at Milk N Honey, and "cheered" when they were successfully able to help turn away patrons of Milk N Honey.
