NORTH HOLLYWOOD - For the sixth consecutive year, the Community Rights Campaign, an initiative of the Labor/Community Strategy Center, held a night of youth expression of poetic resistance at the NoHo Actor's Studio. A standing-room audience, predominantly made up of youth of color, took part in the evening's poetry recital and open mic, which doubled as a fundraiser for the legal defense of Jeremy Marks, an 18-year-old arrested by Los Angeles Schools Police Department and charged with attempting lynching for filming an act of brutality by a member of the department against a fellow student.

Today we mourn the death of Miguel Contreras, a major figure in the Los Angeles and national trade union movement, who died suddenly last Friday of a heart attack. Miguel was the Secretary-Treasurer of the L.A. County Federation of Labor—that is, its executive director, field general, chief strategist and tactician.
Our over reliance on cars endangers us all. Pollution from our primitive, gas-guzzling vehicles poisons our air and damages our health. The economy shudders with every increase in fuel costs.
An upbeat and well-attended public forum to spur grassroots fundraising and organizing against Proposition 54 was held a few hours ago at a church in the Wilshire district. This posting provides access to audio and pictures from the event.
BUSINESS LOBBIES UN AT WORLD SUMMIT ON ENVIRONMENT (tags)
In an effort to turn the WSSD's sustainable development goals into profit-making ventures that will "green" its image, the business lobby gathered yesterday for a full program of "Business Day" activities, featuring representatives from notorious environmental destroyers such as Dow Chemical and Syngenta Corporation. They blamed poverty for the woes of the planet and tried to downplay their own abysmal records.
