Philippine Congressman Walden Bello visits Filipino communities in US cities (tags)
IN several forums this month, Congressman Walden Bello is visiting Filipino-American communities in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland to talk about the upcoming May 13 mid-term congressional elections in the Philippines, and the role his political party, Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party, has played in the passing of progressive legislation during the just-concluded 15th Congress. Akbayan’s Risa Hontiveros is running for a Senate seat in May, and is in the circle of candidates deemed to have a chance of winning a seat – a first in the Senate for Akbayan. Akbayan is also running as a party-list organization to again have their House seats.
Queer Democrats Make Defeating Prop. 32 a Priority (tags)
The predominantly Queer San Diego Democrats for Equality voted August 23 to make defeating Proposition 32 a priority race in the November 6 election. Proposition 32 is an effort to destroy the ability of organized labor to raise money for political campaigns, and it's being sold deceptively as a campaign finance reform measure even though its principal sponsors are multi-million dollar donors to Republican candidates and super-PAC's. On the eve of Women's Equality Day, the club also heard from professors Dr. Sue Gonda and Carla Kirkwood on the history of women's struggles for equality and their links to the Queer rights movement.

The Forgotten Priority of Labor Over Capital (tags)
Politics is responsible for a social market economy and its rules and structures. When the state is reduced to only setting the framework for competition and then appeals to the responsibility of individual entrepreneurs, one falls at once in a neoliberal trap.
Anaheim Elementary Education Assoc. and Board of Ed at IMPASSE! (tags)
PUBLIC NOTICE: The Anaheim Elementary Education Association (AEEA) and the Anaheim City School District (ACSD) bargaining teams met with a State mediator on Friday, July 27, 2007. While the entire AEEA bargaining team came prepared to reach a settlement – cancelling vacations and other personal plans – a crucial member of the District team was NOT in attendance. This absence reinforced the perception that teachers are not a priority in the Anaheim City School District, and it is an indication that reaching a timely settlement is not a District priority. The presence of over one hundred AEEA members, waving signs, wearing buttons, and encouraging honks of support, inspired the AEEA bargaining team and showed the mediator that both its membership and their needs are truly being represented. Public support of AEEA UNION members is very much appreciated!
