The annual Snake Valley Festival held in Baker, NV featured signs focusing on protecting local aquifers from the Southern Nevada Water Authority's proposed pipeline to Las Vegas. Residents of the Snake and Spring Valleys are trying to raise awareness that if the SNWA pipeline is built the water beneath their feet will be taken to Las Vegas for the benefit of golf courses, fountains and other unsustainable development. Entire spring fed ecosystems will collapse and species like the spring snail risk extinction. Public comment sessions will be held throughout Nevada in the coming few weeks to address the concerns about aquifer depletion by the SNWA pipeline.

The first annual City Heights Human Rights Festival drew over 500 people to the streets of San Diego’s most ethnically diverse neighborhood Saturday, December 11 for a march down El Cajon Boulevard and a fair in the parking lot of Hoover High School at El Cajon and 44th Street. Besides speeches by local elected officials who represent the area, including City Councilmember Todd Gloria and his former employer, Congressmember Susan Davis, the event also included musical performers, readings and a showing of a short film by the Media Arts Center, I Want My Parents … Back, dealing with immigrant rights and how border enforcement is breaking up families. The event was organized not only to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, passed by the United Nations in 1948, but to call attention to rights abuses all over the world and especially in Viet Nam. The impetus for organizing the event came from local representatives of the Viet Nam Reform Party, which exists clandestinely in Viet Nam and openly among Viet Namese immigrants in countries like ours that guarantee political freedoms. Among their demands is an end to one-party Communist rule in Viet Nam and an end to its ban on independent media.

The Lotus Festival is taunted to be the Los Angeles’ annual tribute to cross-cultural Asian heritage. This year it reemerged in Echo Park this weekend after a one-year hiatus but still without one significant participant — the lotuses. What Kind of Tribute? The 32-year-old festival has grown over the years from a modest one-day event to a weekend-long extravaganza that has attracted as many as 150,000 people. This year, organizers said they expected roughly 30,000 visitors. Formerly the City of Los Angeles is responsible for the Festival started by API non-profits. But last year it was canceled. They say due to lack of funds and the city's budget problems. But the question asked is that why did the city did not cancel the CInco De Mayo or the Broadway Festival? IS there money for Latinos but not for Asians.?

The Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC)’s Fil-am dance ensemble and the Northern Virginia rondalla represented the Filipino community. They presented five cultural suites in a special evening showcasing the best of Filipino culture. The dance ensemble is composed of performing arts talents from various groups in Virginia and Maryland. In sharp contrast to the earlier meeting in January, a town-hall called by San Diego LGBT Pride February 22 drew only about 50 people and lasted just 45 minutes. Instead of a bitch-fest aimed at getting rid of the Pride board — whose members resigned and were replaced with respected community veterans who'd served on previous Prides — the February 22 meeting offered constructive discussion about the fate of the annual Pride parade and festival, including concerns from politically oriented Queer activists that by abolishing the annual pre-Pride rally, the former board had betrayed the true meaning of Pride.

17th FPAC, A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS (tags)
he week-end of September 6 and 7th was not a typical day. On those two days, the 17th Festival of Filipino Arts and Culture (FPAC) came back with vengeance. While some detractors believed the FPAC is dead and some of them even did their own festival in the suburbs of Los Angeles , for two days, more than 15,000 people flocked to the festival grounds at Point Fermin in San Pedro and enjoyed the display of Filipino and Filipino American sounds and furies and affirmed that FPAC is vibrant, alive and filled with enthusiasm.

On August 2, at the Historic Filipinotown Festival, while more than 600 Historic Filipinotown residents waited for hours for the Filipina “ Superstar “Nora Aunor at the Historic Filipino town festival- another group of less than a hundred well-heeled academics and personalities held their affair in Remy’s On Temple Art Gallery opened the 30-panel murals Smithsonian Exhibits-SINGGALOT. While more than 3,000 people at most participated in the Historic Filipinotown festival held on the streets of Historic Filipinotown, another group of students, academics and professionals oggled at the murals celebrating the centenary of the coming of Filipinos in America. The exhibit that highlighted the Filipino-American history from 1906 to 2006. The Smithsonian exhibits was first showed in Washington DC and will be exhibit at the Remy’s on Temple Art Gallery until October 2008.
