Campaign for justice in Bhopal (tags)
On December 3, 1984 the world's worst industrial disaster attacked the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. Twenty-one years later, the death toll has risen to more than twenty thousand, with thirty people still dying every month due to exposure-related illnesses and more than 150,000 living with them. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001, purchasing its assets as well as its liabilities. Dow set aside $2.2 billion to pay off former Union Carbide asbestos workers in United States but refuses to pay the liabilities in India. University of Texas students are protesting against this apartheid.
Trespass Against Us - 20 Things to Know About Dow Chemical (tags)
At midnight on December 2, 1984, 27 tons of lethal gases leaked from Union Carbide's pesticide factory in Bhopal, India, immediately killing an estimated 8,000 people and poisoning thousands of others. Today in Bhopal, at least 150,000 people, including children born to parents who survived the disaster, are suffering from exposure-related health effects such as cancer, neurological damage, chaotic menstrual cycles and mental illness. Coinciding with the recent 20th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, Jack Doyle came out with a new book "Trespass Against Us: Dow Chemical and the Toxic Century" (Common Courage Press, 2004).
The newspapers on December 30 reported that 477 American GIs had died in the war. But what is not usually reported is that for every death there are four or five men and women seriously wounded. The term "seriously wounded" does not begin to convey the horror. Sergeant Feldbusch's mother, Charlene Feldbusch, who, along with his father, virtually lived at his bedside for two months, one day saw a young woman soldier crawling past her in the corridor. She had no legs, and her three-year-old son was trailing behind. These people pay the price because Americans lack the courage to throw the lying government out on its ass. Every one of those crippled kids looks at America with one message in their eyes, "You could have stopped this, but didn't".
An anti-state communist perspective on the war (tags)
This is 2003 article about the Iraq War 2, just before it started. It's from Anarchy: a journal of desire armed. It's unusually prescient in its predictions of how the entire war will go. I post this because the journal has been criticized by some anarchistists as "primitivist", and Anarchism has been derided by the Left as everything from chaos to disruptive and unthinking. Liberals stereotype anarchists as young fashion victims, implying they are shallow. These are simplistic stereotypes at best, and fear mongering at the worst. Articles like this one below, I hope, give people pause to consider the relevance and usefulness of anti-state, anti-capitalist critique. Remember, this article was written before we invaded Iraq. So here goes. -- Just Another Anarchist
