A Madrid-based lawyer ordered by the heir of the 20th century master painter Picasso has requested the immediate close-down of the American airbase from which the war crimes his grandfather once documented in his most widely known painting had originated. The artwork named “Guernica” after a Spanish city carpet-bombed in the Civil War of the 1930s documents the results of the air raid in the artist’s unique style of greyish black-and-white abstraction avoiding any direct view of blood, but still giving most viewers a striking impression of the suffering imposed by the appearance of the tactic in war theatres around the globe. Katterbach airbase had been set up by the Nazis, and nearly a century after their defeat still is an American aggression hub.

He was invited on “Fox and Friends” and “The O’Reilly Factor” to discuss his campaign to get the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) to recommend that immigrants in the U.S. without official papers be referred to as “undocumented” rather than “illegal.” What he got was a firestorm of bigoted, prejudiced and frequently ad hominem attacks from members of Fox’s core Right-wing audience; “idiot” was actually one of the less mean things he was called in the hundreds of e-mails that flooded in to his accounts after the shows.

To President Bush, America's soldiers are nothing more than props for his never-ending campaign. They were props on May 1 and they were props on Thanksgiving Day. An appearance at the funeral of one of the soldiers who has died in a war that has increased the terrorist threat against America, not diminished it, would be far more meaningful. So would an appearance to greet the coffins coming back from Iraq, ending an unprecedented policy forbidding the media from filming the arrival of America's war dead. Of course, footage like that would not make for jolly White House political propaganda.
