Atheist speaks at Montclair church: Addresses censorship and church-state separation violation in Rancho Cucamonga February 22, 2009 MONTCLAIR, California -- Dan Barker, influential atheist and co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, addressed a full house today at the Monte Vista Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Montclair, a quiet community on the western end of San Bernardino County known more for its shopping mall than as a bastion of religious tolerance and freethought. One topic on the minds of many in the audience was the recent controversy surrounding a FFRF-sponsored billboard reading "Imagine No Religion" in the nearby city of Rancho Cucamonga. Despite the foundation's contract with the billboard company to display the message for a month, the sign was censored after a mere five days. Legal action against the city is pending.

October 25, 2008 RANCHO CUCAMONGA - Student leaders of local high school Gay-Straight Alliances banded together this Saturday to demand equality for LGBT people and spread awareness about the insidious proposition 8. They were joined by teachers, community members, and families. Prop eight, if passed, would eliminate the legal right for same-sex couples to marry. Earlier this year, the California Supreme Court decided that the right to marry was guaranteed by the state constitution, and could not be superseded by initiative.

Capt. Paine, 32, of Rancho Cucamonga, died Sunday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Taji, just north of Baghdad, in Iraq, according to the Department of Defense. Paine was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division in Fort Hood, Texas.

The patients and staff of Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center allowed me into their lives for two days to do this story. I cried many times while I visited, and have cried many times more since then. Their stories are incredible, courageous, and more than anything else, need to be told. Rancho may be shut down within two months. Their lives and the thousands of others that are with them and could have come after them will be changed forever for the worst if this happens. I cannot thank them enough for their generosity and their trust. I hope I can do them justice. Here are some of their stories...
