Recently in addressing the issue of withdrawing troops from Iraq President Obama discussed the idea that to do so was honoring the troops that made so many sacrifices there. He discussed the idea that ending our mission there was the right thing to do. He essentially asserted that by ending the conflicts there and focusing on our home front that we as a nation were behaving honorably. He discussed honoring the Bush timeline as the right thing to do, though he didn't necessarily use those words.

The thrust of today’s talks in Jordan between George Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is clear in advance. Bush, accompanied by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, will insist that the Iraqi leader bow down to US demands for a bloody crackdown against the largest faction in his own government, the anti-occupation Sadrist movement headed by cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and its Mahdi Army militia. News Item: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki’s office has instructed Iraq’s Health Ministry to stop providing mortality figures to the U.N. in an attempt to keep the number of civilian war dead a secret. This comes in the wake of an American epidemiologist study which indicates that 650,000 more people have died since the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq than would have died without the invasion. I have come into possession of a letter from U.S. Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, to the Iraqi Prime Minister on how to deal with this subject. Here is the letter.
